Named Clothing – Saunio Cardigan is the February project for Blue Bird Fabrics #SewMyStyle, project to sew 12 garments in 12 months to raise awareness about the slow fashion movement and encouraging women to take up sewing.
I love cardigans for layering for business attire! Easy way to look put together while still being comfortable.
This particular cardigan is not going to make the regular work rotation list as I made a bad choices with length and material. It’s a bit boxy for me and too short to wear with a belt as it keeps pulling out in the back. I did wear it to work once, and got a few looks and no compliments. The material is also a fuzz magnet.
I bought the material second hand originally thinking it would be great for March’s #SewMyStyle project, but decided it would be better as a cardigan. So close, but not enough drape to pull off this boxy shape on me. Leggings would have been a worse choice for this material though!
I’ve not bought a pattern that required tracing before and not willing to move too far out of my comfort zone, I printed the PDF pattern twice to cut out the pieces. I made the medium size with no alterations. If I were to make another I would add 6″ (12 cm) to allow it to be belted.
The facing wouldn’t lie flat for me to sew the way the pattern required, probably due to a cutting error. I went with edgestitching instead.
The back has asymmetrical coloring, which I’ll call a style choice. After cutting out the material, I read a tip to print an extra pattern piece to make a full pattern instead of cutting on the fold. That would have have make this cardigan closer to the vision I had in my head.
